Osher Life Long Learning Via the University of Utah
This year (2019) I signed up with Osher as an instructor giving three hour classes for one day over three weeks covering "A Soldier's View". The first week is the American Civil War with a bias towards the Union. The Second week covers World War One as an American Doughboy and after class I show the documentary "They Shall Not Grow Old" by Peter Jackson. Week three and the timeline is D-Day, June 6, 1944.
World War Two
On the left ready to go ashore in M38 Field Jacket, wool pants, M28 small pack with entrenching tool and meat can pouch, canteen and cover and wire cutters. Notice the bayonet is carried on the pack and not on the cartridge belt. The uniforms include the M43 field jacket, an invasion vest and M38 field jacket, and Ike jacket and a four pocket Class A jacket. The patches are 104th ID (Timber Wolves), 4th ID and the T in the rank chevrons indicate a Technical rank.
Seen on this table are two revolvers. On the left is a 1917 Colt in .38 and on the right is a Smith & Wesson in .38 S&W. This pistol was known as the Victory Model. The MP helmet with yellow band signifies Division police as apposed to the white band of company MPs. The garrison cap (flat in the middle of picture) was worn instead of the cumbersome saucer hat shown. The radio on the right is a Handy Talkie. Note the German MG 34 on the floor capable of 1200 rounds per minute just like it's replacement the MG 42 (not shown).
I put together an assortment of items that a G.I. would bring home as war trophies (ignore the stick grenade). Once again there is a mixture of original and reproductions as some of the items are very expensive to replace. The two pistols to the left are Beretta Models 1934 and 35. The difference is .380 and .32. These pistols were loved by the Italians, Germans and RAF pilots. The MP40 machine pistol in .9mm is a modern semi-auto. On the belt is a Hitler Youth dagger, and SS Dagger, a bread bag with various pins and medals and a German bayonet. Some of the holsters are real and some repro. The flag is real. The pistols on the right are: a 1944 P38 by Mauser and a modern .380 PPK by S & W.

Creating a studio so that the class can be broadcast on Zoom
These classes on "A Soldier's View" were always intended to be "hands on" with students in the classroom. Due to Covid 19, most schools and colleges closed down during 2020. As a result, lateral thinking created the virtual classroom. I invested in a studio switch box, cameras, tripods etc. so that I could still give an interesting class as close to the original concept as possible. As a benefit, Jacquie will be able to give virtual wine classes in the future if she wants to.
